Krigslive IX - 5th Averland Halberdiers by Ring-A-Ding Krigslive IX - 5th Averland Halberdiers by Ring-A-Ding
Sergeants of the 5th Averland Halberdiers, 'Kejserens KÝtere' (The Emperors Mongrels), are drilling their men between battles.
I'm particularly fond of this unit. Their costumes and equipment is very high standard, and they've got great esprit de corps.

Photo taken during the yearly Krigslive event held in Denmark. This year was The Empire vs. Night Goblins. Sadly, being a combatant myself, I didn't have a chance to bring my camera with me into the field.

They look outstanding. This may be a foolish question, but do they have ay doplelsoldners in the unit? The ones who fought in the front lines with the zweihanders?

While that would be all kinds of awesome, as well as more historically accurate, for these LARPs we try to stick to the Warhammer Fantasy Battles rules of keeping units separate.
A group of pikemen might have a unit of greatswords nearby helping them out, but never mixed together. :)

Yeah. We're fortunate like that to have an event of this scale to attend. :)

A lot of the ones they've made in recent years have bombed hard. Mark of Chaos was atrocious.
I had really high hopes for Warhammer Online, but that turned out to be more WoW and less Warhammer, tbh.

But I hear they're working on a WHFB Total War game, and that might be awesome..!

Why, yes! That's what I'm making these costumes for.
Whole units of people fighting in tight formation, with drummers, standard bearers, and everything! :D

Pretty much, yeah. ;P
The event is usually set in the Warhammer Fantasy world, but last year it got high-jacked for some pseudo-historical 'Crusaders vs. Vikings' thing, and I didn't really fancy it.

Halberds, pikes - polearms in general for me. I would've started a halberd unit if these guys weren't already filling out that role. You have a much higher sense of being part of a unit than you do with sword and shield. If you break rank, you're screwed. :)

What is the difference between a Halberd and a Spearman?

According to the LARP rules, do you mean?
Halberds can chop, slash, and stab - all valid attacks that will 'wound' your foe if they hit. Spears can only stab. All other attacks are disregarded. That might seem to make halberds far more powerful than spears, but the truth is that stabs are generally faster to execute, and you don't get to do a whole lot of overhead chopping, as that carries with it a high risk of hitting your opponent on the head, which should be avoided.

if you can't hit enemies on the head repeatedly and with malice aforethought, what's the point of LARPing ?

Yes, yearly. ;P
We've got some good things going, but it's still a relatively small event (big by Danish standards). Also, it's only a single weekend, so you probably wouldn't want to travel all the way from Spain. ;)

Question, I seem to remember that this is all connected to LARP related combat. I can't tell for certain in the photos but are they carrying foam weapons or is that real steel?

Hehe. I guess that's a good thing? ;P

This is indeed for LARP combat. The halberd heads are made by calimacil. They're extremely durable, and are made to look like actual weapons. You can see the ash wood shaft is padded a good meter or so below the head for extra safety.

The sergeant's spearheads are made from really stiff LARP foam daggers that have had their hilts cut off.

Good thing the shafts are padded to. I remember in college sparing with a couple friends with oak bokkens and just wearing light padding and safety goggles. At the end of day we were pretty black and blue and we weren't even going full out with our blows.

I can imagine! The shafts generally don't do the damage. You do get the odd face-stab and subsequent cracked lip, but nothing too serious.

Yeah, we were young, dumb and bounced back from accidents, injuries, wounds and overall boo boos with a rather cavalier attitude, but that is one of the reasons you send young men to war.
